Wearing the right bra can make a world of difference to the way you look in your clothes. A poorly fitting bra can leave you looking shapeless, and your clothes looking a poor fit, not the mention the health problems it can cause, such as back and shoulder pain, particularly if you are large busted. Take a look at the links below, to help you find a well fitting bra, if you’re not wearing the right size now, I’m sure you’ll really notice the difference if you change.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR BRA IS A POOR FIT.

  • You may feel sore or generally uncomfortable, particularly at the shoulders or under the bust.
  • Bones or wires may dig into you.
  • The back of the bra rides up when you move, does not stay in line with the front.
  • Your bust falls out below or above the cup.
  • There are creases or folds in the cups.
  • Straps keep falling down.

  • You feel generally comfortable all over.
  • Bones or wires will sit flat against the body, and not lift with movement.
  • Straps will feel comfortable and stay up at the shoulders.
  • The back of the bra will stay firmly in position, level with the front of the bra.

HOW TO GET A WELL FITTING BRA.

Finding a well fitting bra can be really difficult, especially when you finally think you’ve got your size, and then a different bra is the same size doesn’t fit at all. Different styles and brands of bras can vary in size quite dramatically, so trying some on really is the only was to find a good fit. Being measured for a bra is the best place to start. Although you may end up with a different size bra to the size you measured, you will have a starting point from which you can adjust the size as you need to. Many high street shops now offer bra measuring of fitting services (this means that they will advise you on how to adjust your bra size to get a good fit, rather than just measuring you) or if you would prefer to measure and fit yourself for a bra, see the advice on measuring below.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR A BRA.

Some tips before you start.

  • Always wear a bra to be measured in.
  • It easier and more accurate if someone measures you, rather than measuring yourself.
  • If you do measure yourself, don’t try to read the tape measure while it is around your body, as it usually moves while you’re trying to read it. Hold or mark to measurement point on the tape measure, and read it when you’ve moved it away from your body.
  • Whether being measured or measuring yourself, it is helpful to stand in front of a mirror, to check the tape measure is level all the way around.

MEASURING.

  1. Place the tape measure around the body, below the bust, ensuring the tape measure is straight all the way around.
  2. Tighten the tape measure until you are conscious of it feeling too tight, and take this measurement in inches. (Your bra will not be this tight, but it is very important to be firm with the tape measure to ensure an accurate measurement)
  3. Write this measurement down, and use it to work out your back size. If your measurement is an even number, you need to +4 to it , and if your measurement is an odd number you +5 to it. This number is your back size. (eg. if your measurement is 40 + 4 = 44, so you are a 44 back size, or if your measurement is 41 + 5 = 46, so you are a 46 back size.)
  4. Next you measure to work out your cup size by placing the tape measure lightly (not tightly this time) around the fullest part of the bust. Again ens you are an A cup. ure the tape measure is level all the way round, and take a measurement in inches.
  5. Now you use you back size, and your full bust measurement to work out your cup size. If your full bust measurement is the same as your back size, you are an A, or for each inch larger, you go up a cup size. So if your full bust measurement is 1 inch larger than your back size you’re a B cup, 2 inches larger, a C cup, 3 inches, a D cup, 4 inches, a DD cup and so on. (eg. if your back size is 44, and your full bust measurement is 48, you are a 44DD)
  6. So now you have your back size, and your cup size, you know what size bra to start with, so give one a try.

HOW TO TRY YOUR BRA ON.

It may seem strange to have advice on trying on your bra, but it’s very important that you are sitting properly in the cups, to get a good fit, and for comfort. Trying your bra on as advised below will your bra, and your bust are in the right places.

  1. Most new bras come with the straps fully tightened, so loosen them before you try the bra on about half way. Ensure both straps are adjusted evenly, but don’t worry about being too precise with the length, they can be adjusted further later.
  2. Put the bra around your waist, with the fastener at the front and fasten it up.
  3. Turn the bra around so the fastener is at the back, and pull the bra upwards, so the underwire, or bottom support of the bra is in place under the bust.
  4. Before pulling up the straps, bent forwards, so your back is flat, this way you will fall into the cups properly, and can now pull up the straps.
  5. Finally, adjust the straps again evenly, so they are comfortable.

Now that you’ve got your bra on properly, hopefully it will be a good fit, if not, adjust your size as needed, using the bra fitting problem solving information.
